Foosball, 1 and 3 goalie?

Why are there 2 different models of foosball tables? Some have only 1 goalie and others have 3 goalies. Why is this? I have noticed that older tables only use 1 goalie and looks like the newer tables use 3 goalies. Why is this? and what do you prefer?

Originally, given that the sport is modeled on ’soccer’, there was a one man goalie rod (and eleven players on each side). The problem of the ball stopping in the corners, and being unreachable, was solved by a gentle curve in the playing field.
In the 1970s the Tornado foosball table switched from the one goalie to the three goalie rod. This was a cost saving measure - the cost of curving the playing field was significantly higher than having a flat surface and 2 extra men to reach into the corners.
Tornado tables are (with the exception of the Carolinas region where they also play Bonzini) the standard tournament style in the US, and as such other manufacturers often simply imitate the 3 rod formation.
As to what I prefer - I like the 3 men, because I’ve grown used to that style, and it makes setting up shots from the 2-rod much more efficient.
